Haus der Heimat
Cooperative d'habitation
375 Louise Lamy, Dorval Quebec H9S 5W6

This housing co-operative was officially opened in October 1993 and serves senior citizens of the greater Montreal area, most of whom speak the German language as their mother tongue. The building is located in central Dorval close to shopping and transportation and has enjoyed full occupancy since it's opening.
All 33 apartments house senior residents ranging in age from 55 to 98.
A separate community room was built in the basement of the residence called "Treffpunkt" (cared for by the German Canadian Community Service Inc) that serves as a meeting place for many of the activities held in the residence. These regular activities include movie night (showing German films)in our community room, gardening (residents maintain the outside gardens), line-dancing, crafts, and birthday parties (always a popular time). Our seniors are all still autonomous and remain active within the residence and their community.
The housing cooperative began as a dream many years ago, and hard work on the part of the founding committee, including working in conjunction with local and provincial governments, which resulted in a ground-breaking in 1992. Volunteers on the founding committee also work with elected house representatives to take care of the responsibilities that go along with a co-operative of this size.
